Data Loss In Mac Due To Damaged Hfs File System Components
The HFS (Hierarchical File System) is the most important component of Mac OS X computer. It provides high stability, data availability and access speed. This file system is made of various components and these components perform given task. These components are useful in improving the speed to your system. The HFS file system divides a hard drive volume into the logical blocks of 512 bytes. These blocks are then grouped together in allocation blocks that can store one or more logical data block, depending upon the total size of volume. The HFS file system employs a 16-bit value to address the allocation blocks, by limiting the number of allocation blocks to 65,536.
The HFS file system is made up of five data structures:
The logical blocks 0 and 1 of Mac volume are Boot Blocks that store system startup information.

The logical block 3 is starting block of Volume Bitmap. It keeps track of which allocation block is free and which is in use.
The Extent Overflow File is the B-tree, which stores extra extents that record which allocation block is allocation to which file, once the first three extents in Catalog File are used up.
Catalog File is another B-tree, which contains records for all files and directories stored in volume. Catalog File stores four kinds of records. Every file has a File Record and File Thread Record while every directory has a Directory Record and Directory Thread Record.
Among all the file system components, the Catalog File is the most important one. It stores all the file and directory records in single data structure that might create performance issues in case of multitasking.
