They sneaked up on you. The first indication you had that things were going wrong came when you tried to button up your favourite jeans – and discovered that breathing in and wrestling with the button didn’t work anymore.
Whatever’s to blame – Christmas, a holiday, or just plain letting things slide – you can get on top of this before it gets out of hand. Don’t bother with the scales; the jeans test told you all you need to know. And don’t bother kidding yourself; you know you didn’t put them through an extra-hot wash. You can’t fit into them because you put on a few pounds. Don’t take my word for it – take the mirror test.
Stand naked in front of a full length mirror and let your stomach muscles relax. Incidentally, do this at home behind closed curtains – not in a department store outfitter’s section. Can you grab a handful of flab at the waist? Time to lose a few pounds. The good news is it needn’t take long.
Don’t just rely on diet changes. These tend to be a quick fix, but they leave you run down and with less muscle mass, so you just put the weight you lost back on. Dig the running shoes out of the closet and gently ease your way back into an exercise routine. The good news is, if you work hard enough you can eat more and still lose weight. (That’s not a challenge, by the way.)
Don’t just rely on cardio exercise. Introduce weight training into your routines, but do it carefully. Don’t buy a set of free weights and make it up as you go along. If you’ve never lifted before, go to a gym and get professional instruction. A couple of hours spent learning correct form in various exercises could save you years of back pain and joint problems.
Bottom line? Work that body and eat right. You’ll tone up without even trying. And you’ll still get to wear your favourite jeans.
